How to find competitor weaknesses from Trustpilot, G2 and Reddit
Every SaaS competitor publishes its weaknesses for free. They’re just scattered across review sites and forum threads, written by people annoyed enough to type. This is the method we use to find them, size them and decide which are worth attacking.
The short answer
- Trustpilot surfaces billing, cancellation and support pain; G2 and Capterra surface product and implementation gaps; Reddit surfaces unfiltered switching stories and named alternatives.
- Filter to 1★–2★ and the last 6–12 months, then group complaints into three to six themes.
- A weakness worth attacking is common (share of reviews), urgent (switching intent) and one you genuinely solve.
- Across our 10 teardowns, pricing and contract complaints are a top-three trigger in 9, and support in 10.
Where competitor weaknesses hide — and what each source is good for
Trustpilot: billing, cancellation and support
Trustpilot reviews skew toward paying customers who hit a wall with the company rather than the product: surprise renewals, refused refunds, unreachable support. In our Salesforce teardown, “Billing & Cancellation Hurdles” was the most common complaint — 50% of the low-star sample.
G2 and Capterra: product gaps from serious buyers
Reviewers on G2 and Capterra are usually practitioners who evaluated or implemented the tool. Their 1★–2★ reviews name missing features, painful onboarding and integrations that break — material for comparison pages and demo scripts.
Reddit: unfiltered switching stories
Threads in communities like r/SaaS, r/startups, r/marketing or a tool’s own subreddit are where people ask “what should I move to?” They name alternatives, quote prices and describe migrations. Search site:reddit.com "Competitor" alternative or "Competitor" cancel, then read the comments, not just the posts.
App stores and plugin marketplaces
For tools with mobile apps or Shopify and WordPress plugins, store reviews surface reliability problems fast: crashes, sync failures, broken updates.
The 6-step method to find competitor weaknesses
- 01
List the 3–5 competitors your buyers actually compare you with
Use lost-deal notes, G2 compare pages and “alternatives” searches. Don’t analyse the whole market.
- 02
Collect only 1★ and 2★ reviews
Low-star reviews hold the reasons people leave; dropping the praise removes noise. Take the newest 50–200 per source.
- 03
Tag each review with one primary complaint
Pricing and contracts, support, reliability, complexity, missing features, account issues. Six themes or fewer.
- 04
Count share and switching intent
For each theme: the % of reviews that mention it, and how many of those say they’re cancelling, migrating or evaluating alternatives.
- 05
Pull verbatim proof
Two or three exact quotes per theme. Copy them character for character and keep the source link.
- 06
Score and pick
Rank themes by share × switching intent, then cross out any you also suffer from. What’s left is your attack surface.
The weaknesses that show up again and again in B2B SaaS
Run this method across enough tools and the same few themes keep winning. Here is how often each pain category appears among the top three churn triggers across our 10 public teardowns (543 low-star reviews):
- Support decay10/10HubSpot · Salesforce · Monday.com · Notion · Asana · Zendesk · Intercom · Mailchimp · Klaviyo · Hootsuite
- Pricing lock-in9/10HubSpot · Salesforce · Monday.com · Notion · Asana · Intercom · Mailchimp · Klaviyo · Hootsuite
- Reliability5/10Monday.com · Notion · Zendesk · Intercom · Klaviyo
- Feature bloat2/10HubSpot · Salesforce
- Account risk1/10Mailchimp
- Trust & values1/10Hootsuite
In this sample, support decay and pricing lock-in lead. Support and pricing weaknesses are good news for challengers because they are easier to beat with policy — human support, monthly plans, painless cancellation — than with engineering.
Real examples: weaknesses found in public reviews
Billing & Cancellation Hurdles
“For the price, this is the worst CRM you can get. I have been with them for years under duress. Once you are in, it's hard to move away. I am finally moving away and couldn't be more excited.”
Hard-to-reach Customer Support
“I tried to contact zendesk , Zendesk represents customer service RBFA , but if you call them nobody answers the phone , waste of money I called them on 5 different days during opening hours”
Unresponsive, Unhelpful Support
“Customer service Zero. Warning, this was a super respectable tool for so many years but totally went down in both performance and support level. Stay away!”
Each one points to a different counter-position. Name the pain in the customer’s words — “Billing & Cancellation Hurdles”, “Hard-to-reach Customer Support”, “Unresponsive, Unhelpful Support” — and show, concretely, how your product removes it.
How ChurnMine automates this in 60 seconds

| Total, one competitor | ≈ 6 h 10 min of manual work | ≈ 60 seconds to run + your read-through |
Manual times are our estimates for about 100 low-star reviews of one competitor. ChurnMine reads up to 200 reviews per audit; a typical audit finishes in about a minute.
- Manual spreadsheet work
- 18 h 30 min
- With ChurnMine (run + read)
- 33 min
≈ 17 h 57 min saved per month.
Estimate: manual time per competitor is the table’s total; ChurnMine assumes about a minute to run an audit and ten to read the dossier. Your mileage will vary.
Validate a weakness before you build a campaign on it
- Is it recent? A 2021 complaint about a bug that has since been fixed isn’t an opening. Weight the last 6–12 months.
- Is it common? Below roughly 10% of low-star reviews it’s an anecdote — a supporting point, not a headline.
- Does it cause switching? Annoyance without intent to leave doesn’t move deals. Look for “cancelled”, “moving to”, “looking for an alternative”.
- Do you actually solve it? If your own reviews show the same problem, attacking it backfires the moment a prospect checks.
- Can you prove it? Every claim should be backed by verbatim quotes you can show.
Frequently asked questions
01 · Find competitor weaknesses in reviews
How do I find a competitor’s weaknesses?
Collect their recent 1★–2★ reviews from the sites your buyers use (Trustpilot, G2, Capterra, app stores) plus relevant Reddit threads, group the complaints into a few themes, measure how common each theme is and how often it makes people switch, and keep verbatim quotes as proof. ChurnMine automates this from a review-page URL in about a minute.
Can ChurnMine analyse Reddit threads?
Not by URL. Copy the thread or the relevant comments into the Paste tab, or upload them as a CSV, and ChurnMine runs the same clustering, quantification and quote extraction on that text.
How many reviews do I need to find reliable weaknesses?
At least 30 low-star reviews per competitor for directional results; 50–200 is better. ChurnMine reads up to 200 per audit and flags small samples — our Intercom teardown is marked directional because only 12 low-star reviews were available.
